An Official Oblivion Remake Could be Coming Soon
According to credible leakers, a remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion could be revealed this month. This is claimed to be part of a January Xbox showcase detailing the company’s releases for 2025. Information on an Oblivion remake may seem familiar after many documents were leaked during investigations while Xbox was still in the process of acquiring Blizzard. As part of this line-up of games, an Oblivion remake was planned for 2022 which, of course, didn’t end up happening.
With many projects on that list being cancelled or just unconfirmed (such as Dishonored 3 and a Fallout 3 remaster), it could be argued that the list of titles has changed dramatically since the roadmap was made. Still, considering that this leak places the Oblivion remaster right after the Indiana Jones games (which released just last month), if these plans are still in the works, it could be that we see Oblivion as the next Bethesda release before even the already revealed Doom: The Dark Ages.
Should these leaks be true and we do indeed receive an Oblivion remake/remaster in 2025, this would be very coincidental timing considering that a fan made mod titled ‘Skyblivion’ is set to release at some point this year too. This mod, which has been a decade in the making, sees the entirety of Oblivion being remade in the Skyrim engine. Not only that but other additions such as improved dungeons, better enemy/boss variety and a more enjoyable levelling system are set to make Skyblivion a vast improvement on the original in most ways.
With news of an official remaster, then, this leaves many questioning what will happen with the free modded version. With Bethesda’s history in encouraging modding, it’s likely that Skyblivion will still be released with no issues. Still, even if this is the case, a Bethesda published remaster would take away a lot of the attention from the Skyblivion team’s achievements. Of course, that depends on what this 'remaster’ is going to even include. Just improved graphics or overhauls of some more outdated systems? That remains to be seen- as does the question of whether this remaster is even real. We made find out together later this month
