Spyro Reignited Trilogy Lands Onto Game Pass
After it was teased earlier this week, Spyro’s remastered original trilogy is now available for Game Pass subscribers. Better yet, its not locked behind ultimate as any standard subscription lets you download this one. This contains the PS1 classics Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. These are absolutely phenomonal classic platformers and, thanks to the advancements made in the reignited trilogy, they’re brought into the modern day in a fantastic showing.
This drop was hinted towards this week when Xbox tweeted about a familiar looking box native to the Spyro games. Just a few days later, Spyro’s original trilogy has hit Game Pass. Toys for Bobs’ reimagining of these classics involves quality of life improvements, adjustments to some of the more poorly aged mechanics and, of course, gorgeous visuals that make this one of the best looking platformers of all time- even if it is now over six years old.
The impact that the original Spyro games had is up there with legends like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter. Like those games, Spyro was a fantastic early PlayStation platformer that showed just how advanced and impressive 3D environments could be. More of a vast sandbox than the traditional levels of Crash and Mario, Spyro tasks players with finding gems, mystical orbs and more hidden in each and every crevasse of the world. This trilogy feels like an easter egg hunt to the extreme in the best way possible.
While subsequent entries in the series certainly lacked the charm and quality of the original releases, at least the reignited trilogy recaptures those nostalgic feelings. Unfortunately, it seems that a true successor to these classics isn’t likely considering Toys for Bob now being independent from Activision. Hopefully, Activision does decide to do something about the Purple Dragon but, considering the last 20 years, I wouldn’t hold your breath. Either way, you can pick up the trilogy now on Game Pass Standard and above.
