Yooka Replaylee Teases Switch 2 Port
Playtonic Games have announced that the divisive ‘Yooka-Laylee’ would be receiving a definitive remastered and enhanced port coming to all major consoles at some point likely next year. What caught many player’s eyes about this announcement was the wording used around the Nintendo ports of the game. Instead of just saying that the game would come to the Switch, the developers referenced just ‘Nintendo’ in the trailer. This implies that the remaster would not come to the Switch but, instead, the next console in Nintendo’s library.
While we know that PS5, Xbox Series and PC will be around for a while yet, the current status of Nintendo’s next console is unknown. It’s coming up to 8 years since the release of the Nintendo Switch- longer than most consoles. Nintendo have repeatedly stated that there will be no news on the Switch’s successor in several presentations now but, with 2025 fast approaching, we could see some sort of announcement before the end of the year. Even if there is a delay, the chances we see the Switch 2 come past 2025 are slim.
As for the trailer that got people speculating, Yooka Replaylee, this remaster that may or may not be coming to the Switch includes better animations, new challenges, revised controls and a bunch of additional extras that set this release apart from the original release back in 2017. This game wasn’t initially well received due to its poor controls and less than stellar level design but, with these new enhancements, Yooka Laylee may finally be able to live up to the legacy of the classic Nintendo 64 platformers that were its biggest influences.
Strangely enough, Yooka Laylee’s initial release was just a month after the Nintendo Switch became available (although it didn’t come to the system until much later that same year). Will the upgraded remaster of the game also come just after the release of the Switch’s successor at some point next year? Judging by the trailer that fails to specify which Nintendo console this would be coming to, this may be one of the first concrete pieces official confirmation that refer to the Nintendo Switch 2. Keep an eye on this release at some point next year (hopefully).
