Mario Kart World Review Bombed After Latest Update

Despite being very well received, the latest release in the Mario Kart franchise has been receiving a plethora of negative reviews since its most recent update. In fact, the Metacritic score for the game has dropped to ‘mixed or average’ after being quite positive since release. What about this update is so bad that people have taken to giving it 0/10 scores though?

This seemingly small update simply changed how online players select courses. Initially, the regular 3-lap courses (which most players want to play on) were quite common- allowing a random course with this 3-lap structure to be selected. Since the most recent update, however, a greater emphasis has been placed on ‘intermission’ races. Unlike the 3-lap structure, these intermission courses essentially just see players driving from one course to another without the normal variety of most regular tracks.

Unless most players in the lobby vote for a specific 3-lap track, the ‘random’ option will cause an increased likelihood of intermission tracks- which are much less favoured by the community. Essentially, the more well liked 3 lap tracks are being replaced by straighter roads that offer less variety for players. Whether the review bombing will actually make a difference is another question entirely. Scores on sites like Metacritic continue to fall so, should Nintendo take notice, a patch changing how tracks are selected could be changed. Until then, 0/10 scores continue to flood the game’s pages online.
