Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Continues the Fantastic HD-2D Trend

In what is Square Enix’s latest remake in their signature HD-2D style (still holding out hope for a Chrono Trigger remake in this engine), Dragon Quest III has been released to critical acclaim. The game was released earlier this week to a mighty 85 rating on Opencritic where 91% of critics recommended it. This makes it the 5th subsequent game in Square Enix’s HD-2D series with an average score of above 80.

One publication that was especially impressed with the advancements and improvements made to this remake was Hardcore Gamer. They said this in their 9/10 review:

“Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is how a classic game should be remade. The new graphics style brings Dragon Quest III into the modern era while maintaining the original iconic designs. The quality-of-life improvements also make the 36-year-old game feel modern without sacrificing the core elements of the original experience.”

Quality of life improvements, the ability to speed up battles to get through some of the more tedious areas and, of course, a complete graphical overhaul make the Dragon Quest III Remake worth taking a look if you’re a JRPG fan. Even if you weren’t a fan of the dated original, you may be able to find new love in this reimagining of the game built from the ground up. From Octopath Traveller to this latest remake, the HD-2D formula seems to be a winning one for original and remade games alike.

The critical success of this remake tees up next year’s Dragon Quest I/II releases under the same treatment quite nicely. This duology has yet to receive a release date but, with the buzz around their most recent remaster, one can hope that this drops at some point in the first half of the year. Until then, you can pick up the Dragon Quest III Remake on all major platforms right now.
